In this installation, for which we made the painted wooden skeleton, consisting of 30 cubes and parallelipeds, the artists use indigo textiles, along with music and performance to reflect on the theme of migration and colonialism.
The history of indigo textiles is deeply linked to the history of the slave trade that brought the translation of indigo cultivation to America from Africa.
Fabrics are printed in Sufiyan Khatri’s Ajrakh workshop in Ajrakhpur, India. Using traditional hand-dyeing methods, Ajrakh is a four-thousand-year-old practice passed down orally from generation to generation.
